- Event to highlight revolution in childhood development
- Neuroscientists and experts to explore how a child’s
brain develops
and how parents and teachers can have a positive impact
Toronto, February 23,
2012 -
Canadian researchers have
discovered that preparing a child's
brain to learn is almost as important as what they learn.
Dr.
Sylvain Moreno, Lead Scientist with Baycrest’s Centre for Brain Fitness, will
join other thought-leaders from the education and neuroscience fields at the
first annual Brain Power Conference
being held at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto on May 3-4, 2012. The conference will interest parents, teachers and
other stakeholders who want information about the latest neuroscience findings
and their implications for shaping education, cognitively-beneficial media and
experiences for children.
“Recent scientific discoveries in childhood cognitive training have exciting implications for conceptualizing and improving neuroeducation programs for children of all ages, and potentially for older adults,” says Dr. Moreno, a keynote speaker on May 3. His groundbreaking research with a team of Canadian scientists has found exciting evidence that pre-schoolers can improve their verbal IQ after only 20 days of classroom instruction using interactive, music-based cognitive training cartoons -- http://news.baycrest.org/2011/10/young-children-show-improved-verbal-iq.html

Brain Power Initiative
The Brain Power Initiative is a cross-disciplinary collaboration that brings together parents, educators, industry stakeholders and policymakers with researchers and academia from leading institutions, including The Royal Conservatory, TFS – Canada’s International School, Baycrest’s Centre for Brain Fitness, Bloorview Research Institute, the University of Toronto, York University, McMaster University, George Brown College and Centennial College.
Collaborative
partners will examine what the latest scientific evidence means to the future
of education and whether it is possible to have a direct impact on a child’s
capacity to learn.
